Rituals and Horoscopes for the Vernal Equinox
We celebrate the Vernal Equinox on the same day astrologer’s celebrate the first day of Aries season...and we don’t believe that’s a coincidence! In short, both are about celebrating a fresh beginning. Vernal literally means fresh or new...just like the spring, and just like Aries!
The Wheel of Fortune Tarot card comes to mind this time of year, because it’s really about a turning of the wheel. It doesn’t promise anything good or bad, it just assures change is afoot. And of course, at least in the U.S., this week marked one year (!!!) of COVID lockdowns, and life as we know it shifting, never to be the same again.
Just like last year, and just like every other Vernal Equinox, we’re transitioning from a deep and mysterious watery realm into dry, surface level heat. Beware of mirages, but be brave in spite of them! This is a time for beginnings and charging (or should we say, springing) forth into the unknown.
Clearly, we love a good ritual around here! And especially at the two equinoxes each year, we find them to be really supportive in our spiritual practice. With that said, rituals of any kind are an extremely personal process. While we have products in the shop that we hope you’ll love, our favorite aspects of any ritual are the unique, individual touches.
To begin, the Vernal Equinox is about BEGINNINGS, so we can think about the root chakra. What tangible items in your life serve to ground you? Maybe there’s a crystal you keep close when things are feeling intense, or perhaps there’s a favorite book on your shelf that reflects your human experience. It could even be a photograph of a time you were shining really bright.
Whatever it is, try to find a personal item that can act as a sort of totem to honor this energy of initiation, bravery, physicality, and ultimately, unapologetic self-expression.
From there, the world is your oyster! We love the idea of honoring Mother Nature by incorporating fresh flowers, herbs, or even dirt into your ritual! The Sacred Circle is a popular shape for ritual work, because it’s both protective and powerful (just like Aries energy) so maybe you encircle your personal item with whatever natural element makes the most sense for you!
As a final step in the process, lean into the energy of FIRE as that’s what the Vernal Equinox and Aries season are all about. Fire cleanses and purifies. It burns away what is no longer needed while supporting and keeping fresh life warm.

Once you’ve compiled all these items, placing them together in an area of your home that you find sacred is how to really turn it into a ritual. Call it an altar, or not! You can call it whatever you want. It doesn’t have to be anything more or less than an intentional, physical representation of energy you’d like to honor and manifest at this time.
