MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
Mental health and wellness matters to us...a lot. We believe it translates through a lot of what we do and what we offer. And while the topic of “Mental Health” has definitely become a buzzword lately, we’re more interested in the daily RITUALS that will support us in the long term than any one off.
Let us start by saying, you are not alone.
Millions of people struggle with mental health around the world every single day and while their stories might not be exactly the same as yours, it’s comforting when you’re feeling down to know that others have experienced struggles, too, and been able to overcome them.
We love this list of personal stories from the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
We wanted to not only address the importance of mental health here, though, but give you lots of affordable (and many free!) resources to support you as you navigate your own.
Resources we love to tend to our mental health...
- Meditation
While meditation isn’t for everyone, it can look like a lot of different things. Are you a runner or a yogi? Those are forms of active meditation! You don’t have to book a three-month getaway to an ashram to tap into stillness and your breath. It also doesn’t have to be expensive! We’re all about accessibility within mental health around here, and there are tons of FREE YouTube videos that can guide you through breathing techniques, too. A few of our favorite accessible resources for meditation:
- Sleep hygiene
If you’ve ever had a night of bad sleep, or if you suffer from insomnia frequently, you know how important rest really is to your mental wellbeing. While we do believe in listening to your body, and trusting that it knows what’s best...regular sleep is always the goal! Just don’t be too hard on yourself if there’s a New Moon, or a Full Moon, and you’re either REALLY wired, or super tired! We recommend these to help with a good night's sleep:
- Crystals + Metaphysical practices
Before you roll your eyes, we’re NEVER suggesting that a crystal can cure any one of a mental health illness. However, we do find them supportive in our holistic approach to mental health. In addition to paying attention to the current astrology and even Tarot cards, we find metaphysical practices to be a great addition to other more “traditional” Mental Health practices.
- Apps + Instagram Accounts
It’s the Age of Aquarius, after all, so mental health is no longer relegated to stuffy and/or expensive therapists offices. We now have the ability to access a plethora of mental health resources at our fingertips, and often, completely for free. We especially love these apps & instagram accounts:
Our Kara Hinson tote donates 100% of profits to sadgirlsclub
There are SO MANY different ways to give back to organizations that support mental health. One of many is through your money! We view money as energy, and giving it to support mental health initiatives feels really good for our wallets.
If you have anything to spare, consider purchasing our tote which donates 100% of profits to the Sad Girls Club (an org supporting mental health among black and brown women).
We're sending you so much love and support this month, and always!
