Birthstone of the Month: DIAMOND!
Happy birth month to all you April (Aries + Taurus) babies! This month, we're celebrating DIAMONDS, the April birthstone. Read on to find out a little more about the history of the diamond, their healing properties, sustainability, and a few of our top picks in store right now.
Brief History of the Diamond
Diamonds have been around…essentially forever! Though technically the first ones were found in India in the 4th century BC, the youngest of those deposits were formed nine hundred million years ago! They’re formed, like most beautiful things in life, through a lot of hard work and pressure.
While under extremely high heat deep in the Earth, they’re created through immensely pressured conditions and eventually ejected upwards. Once they reach the surface, or near it, they’re harvested by nature or humans, usually a combination of both. Then after a lot of cutting and polishing, they eventually find their way into jewelry stores and finally onto the bodies of millions of people around the world.
Healing Properties of the Diamond
Diamonds are, first and foremost, a symbol of purity. They never need charging or cleansing like other stones, and can actually be used to charge and cleanse other gems in their vicinity. Diamonds enhance the power of any other stones around them, making them a master for energy work of all kinds. It’s great for use in detoxing and purifying the body and because it’s the hardest stone on Earth…it promotes strength and vitality. If you’re looking to up-level your crystal game, diamonds are the ultimate healing stone to add to your collection.
Sustainable Diamonds
If you’re looking to shop for sustainable diamonds, you’re in luck! There are many ways to bring a beautiful diamond into your life if you’re concerned about sustainability. Of course there’s always the option of vintage jewelry which we love, and you might even have heirloom pieces in your family that get passed down from generation to generation.
In lieu of those options though, there’s also ways to buy something sustainably that’s new, and shopping locally is a great place to start. Our sister store, AMJ, has a plethora of absolutely gorgeous Herkimer diamond jewelry. The limestone caves of Herkimer, New York are exclusively where the namesake gems are found…and they just so happen to be nearby!
Herkimer diamonds are naturally double-terminated quartz crystals that were originally called “diamonds” because of their rareness in nature by the Mohawk Indians. They’re close to five hundred million years old (!!!) making them powerful amplifiers of grounded energy. These crystals are magnificent works of nature, found embedded in rock with a diamond-like geometrical shape. As an added bonus to all that, they also feature a 0.5+ increase in hardness from regular quartz on the Mohs scale.
