Can you introduce yourself for us - who you are, where you’re from, what you do?
I'm Caitlin. I'm a local, Philadelphia artist and I've been living here for about 11 years but I hail from rural Pennsylvania. I'm an artist and illustrator for myself but I also have been working professionally in costumes and props for the past decade.
What's your zodiac sign?
Gemini
How did you get your start in your field of design?
I started making these drawings and illustrations of things I remembered and then creating sculptures out of them. I became so obsessed with memory's fragility but influence in our lives - the idea that a memory is only as clear as the last time you remember it. This idea that we're going through much of the same with different permutations is both eerie and comforting. It's that juxtaposition I strive for. In a way, it's therapy.
How and where do you find inspiration?
It's kind of corny, but I like to think of it as literal "headspace". My goal is to turn anxieties, fears, and big emotions into something constructive. Sometimes it comes from the title first, sometimes the image makes its way first. But they come together to create something that reminds you that you are not alone and your feelings are valid.
What’s your favorite part about the design process?
I love when I give myself a challenge with a piece. Much of my work contains intricate details that allow for an almost meditative, transformative mode of working.
Who are some other artists/designers/brands you look up to?
There are so many! Amy Cutler and Aubrey Beardsley have been long-time inspirations. Kelsey Bowen (@kjbowen) ceramics, Taylor Hultquist-Todd (@taylorbrynart) incredible series of tarot decks. If you want more Philly artist, give @mostknownunknown.phl a follow on Instagram - everyone there is so great (and local)! I really look up to Sonja Rasula in brand-making and small business advice. And The Jealous Curator has an incredible blog that features so many wonderful artists.
Any words of wisdom for fellow makers or peers looking to get their business off the ground?
Don't be afraid to reach out to other makers. I thought I had to figure everything out myself for the longest time. When I reached out to makers who had experience in what I was trying to make for myself, the results reached way beyond my expectations. Many makers (myself included) love sharing sources and techniques for making the magic happen - it really is a community!
What is a dream project/goal for you?
Right now, I am shifting in my own practice. I would love to fully embrace my two worlds together - creating illustrations and creating costumes. So a big goal is to transform some of those illustrations to sculpture or wearables, maybe even an installation.
WHAT’S YOUR RITUAL? What are some of your most important self-care rituals?
I love lists. I keep several running lists for potential titles and images (if only I kept them all in the same place). I make lists for my day even if there is little on it. Lists help me quiet my busy brain and allow me to bring focus into my day.
